The dens were warm by the time she reached them, and a trio of rambunctious puppies were waiting for her. Blackpaw had apparently been successful in a hunt because there were a few rabbits piled up nearby as well. The pups had been chewing on one when Silvertail got back. Blackpaw was laying in the entrance, watching them.
Silvertail turned back to make sure that Raintail and Violetfang were still with her. "These are the dens," she said unnecessarily, and then she nuzzled one of the pups out of the way. "You'll have to excuse us, as we're unused to company." Though she was affectionate towards them, one could tell the pups were not Silvertail's. They were all slightly different ages, and they seemed to be fond of her more like an aunt than a mother. Blackpaw ignored the newcomers as best he could, retreating deeper into the dens.
Raintail’s head swiveled around. “I’ve never noticed these caves before, and I’m usually near this area. I know there’s a nice thicket between here and the lake. That’s where I usually sleep.”
Violetfang looked longingly at the puppies and slowly walked over to them. She laid down and stared at them, yipping when they played too rough. The puppies shied away from the stranger, but eventually came to ignore her presence unless she was speaking to them.
As they all settled down, Silvertail watched the other two, and she gnawed slowly on one of the rabbits. The three puppies were slowly growing more comfortable around the two new wolves, particularly the one who didn't mind letting them know when they were too rough. Amusement clear in her expression, she moved over to the other two, carrying rabbits, and gently set them down in front of each newcomer. "I don't know if you are hungry or not, but... If you like, we can go hunting later."
Violetfang sniffed the rabbit before gnawing hungrily at it. After eating a few bites, she nodded at Silvertail. "Hunting sounds fun. It has been ages since I've hunted with others." Smiling she went back to her food.
Raintail’s tongue lolled out of her mouth. “Thank you.” She looked at a pup who wandered over towards her. He sat on the other side of the rabbit and cocked his head at her. As she laid down before her rabbit, she addressed the pup, “Hello. Can I help you?”
The pup stood up and walked to stand slightly closer to her. “I saw you.”
She looked bemusedly at the splotch-nosed pup. “Really? Where did you see me at? I haven’t seen you before.”
The pup tugged on an ear of the rabbit. “Down at the lake!”
"Really? Why didn't you mention it, little one?" Silvertail watched the interaction between the pup and Raintail curiously.
His eyes widened as he realised Silvertail overheard him. His ears flicked and his head dropped marginally before he gave a tongue-lolling grin and bounded over to her. "I was scouting it out, to make sure that it was safe for Bluenose and White-eye." His chest puffed out and he lept onto Silvertail's back. His back legs scrabbled for purchase before he was able to finish climbing onto her. "But then I remembered that I was told to not go away from you or Blackpaw and I came right back and Blackpaw had rabbits here!"
After finishing her rabbit, Violetfang shook herself and sneezed. Standing, she stretched and yawned.
By now the young pup was chasing Raintail's tail as it swished back and forth. One of the larger pups was content to run in and out of Violetfang's legs, barking at another pup who was sunbathing. That pup would look up at the white-marked pup and yipped when she grew too loud before falling back asleep. |

Glad to see other wolves that the pups could play with, Silvertail was content to lay there and watch them though half-closed eyes. She was, for the moment, not having to play mother to three pups that were not her own. She happily chewed on her rabbit, taking her time, enjoying it. It had been a long time since she could just enjoy the taste of her food and savor the feeling of it filling her up slowly.
Raintail let out a bemused chuffing sound as Greenpaw managed to catch her tail. She finished eating her rabbit then yanked her tail out from under him, sending the pup rolling. When he managed to right himself, he bayed and pounced on her tail again.
Violetfang quickly pranced around White-eye and pounced her. The pup growled playfully, struggling to get up. After she nuzzled White-eye's belly, she let the young one up.
Greenpaw ran and tackled White-eye, sending the both of them rolling into Bluenose. Startled at the sudden awakening, Bluenose yelped and bit down on the first thing she was able to grab, which happened to be White-eye's hind leg.
White-eye yelped and growled at Bluenose. She tried to bite the other female but missed and found Greenpaw's ear. Violetfang barked in warning at the puppies when she saw the escalating violence.
Giving a bark at the pups to get them to stop, Raintail picked up Bluenose by the scruff of the neck. Greenpaw raced underneath the pup, yipping loudly.
A low growl from Silvertail was all that was needed to immediately break up the pups, and indeed, the motherly wolf didn't even lift her head. The pups instantly ceased and went back to merely sniffing the new wolves, only lightly playing instead of letting it get so rough.
Violetfang smiled at the puppies reaction to Silvertail. She sat and began to groom herself, while still watching the pups.
Raintail's eyes widened marginally and she lowered Bluenose to the ground. Raintail's fur was slightly ruffled as she sat down. Greenpaw nudged her stationary tail. "I don't think we should play that game for a little while, Greenpaw." She nudged him gently with her head. |

Raintail let out a soft chuckle. "I remember as a pup I raised havoc for my Zeta. The bigger pups would chase me and I duck into some thorn brambles to get away from them. We all wound up covered in thorns. Them, more than me."
"It seems like such a long time since I was a pup." Violetfang smiled softly, remembering the past. "I remember sleeping a lot, and getting attacked by my siblings, much like Bluenose just now."
Raintail grinned over at Violetfang. "Well, in their defense, in my pack, I was the one who jumped on the other pups while they slept. That's why they chased me."
"Indeed... I just find myself worrying much more about these than I'm sure many worried about me. After all, I grew up with a proper pack, not just one female, a young male and two other puppies." Silvertail snorted slightly, shaking her head. "I hope that more wolves come soon."
"This is a fertile valley, I'm sure others will find their way here soon. After all, Raintail and myself found our ways here."
Raintail nodded in agreement. "I'm sure they'll be fine. After all, all this while, I thought I was the only one to find this place and all of a sudden there's six others here." Raintail almost beamed at Silvertail. "All these wolves all of a sudden surely means there's going to be more and more coming!"
"That's true." Silvertail lifted herself up, and she looked toward the entrance to the dens. "Blackpaw," she called over her shoulder, and the young male slowly eased out in their direction. He didn't look too happy, but that wasn't a surprise. A wolf his age was normally beginning to work their way up ranks in the pack, court females, and prepare to enter into their adulthood. Now, he was stuck here, with no pack, no eligible females, and a bunch of pups to watch.
"Blackpaw," Silvertail repeated, her voice commanding and low, "I want you to watch the den. I'm going scouting." It wasn't in her nature to stay still for very long; it was what had made her such an excellent Delta. She turned to meet Blackpaw's eyes, and he nodded lowly toward her. Then she was gone, trotting out of the dens.
Blackpaw laid in her spot, his eyes narrowing on the two new wolves. He didn't really trust them, and he made that much obvious in his manners.
Raintail eyed the younger wolf. Even she could tell that he did not like being here. She cleared her throat. "So, are you and Silvertail from the same pack?" |

Basically, humans killed off the rest of the pack, and we were the only ones to get away." He looked down at White-eye, who was trying and failing to break the skin on her rabbit. Holding it down with one paw, he did it for her, and then let the pup start eating. "What about you? Where did you two come from?" |
