She lifted her nose, taking in deep breaths of the cool spring air. She was lucky to have found this place, with it's abundance of food and homes. Many packs could thrive in this place, and she hoped that one day they would. Stretching, she turned her back to the north and began to walk back toward the dens. Suddenly, she stopped, lifted her head, and howled. Maybe someone would hear, and maybe someone would come. But for now, she had to care for the puppies, and had little time to scout herself for others.
(From Open Lake) A flurry of waves broke when a lone howl resounded throughout the area. A wolf poked her head up through the surface of the water, facing northward. She swam back towards the bank. Shaking herself off, she howled back a response as she headed towards the source of the sound.
The wind ruffled Silvertail's fur as she listened to the new howl. She stiffened at first, then forced herself to relax slightly. She had been hoping others would find this place, and now it was beginning to happen. Perhaps packs really would flourish here. She calmed herself, howled again, and settled down to wait. She kept her attention toward the way of the lake, where it had come from, watching for the newcomer.
Raintail easily ran through the tall grasses, despite her head barely clearing the tops of the plants. Pausing, she heard a howl in reply to her earlier one. She had been running slightly off course. Raintail snorted at that, then resumed running, this time in the right direction. She spied another wolf and slowed her run as she approached.
Upon seeing the new wolf, Silvertail stood and met her halfway. She took in a deep breath, memorizing the new scent. Tilting her head slightly, she asked quietly, "I am Silvertail. Where do you come from?" She was fairly sure that she'd scouted out the valley as thoroughly as she could have... perhaps this small wolf had escaped her detection before, but...it was unlikely. She hadn't been a Delta for all that time for nothing, after all.
Raintail came to a stop in front of the Silvertail. She looked about. “I’m not really sure about that myself. I’ve been down at the lake more often than not. You’re the first wolf I’ve seen around here.” She paused as though realizing something. “Oh yeah. My name is Raintail. How long have you been here?”
From the very northern edge of the Grasslands, a head lifted from the grass as several howls echoed across the fields. Standing and shaking the grass from her fur, she lifted her muzzle in greeting.
The new howl startled Raintail, and she jumped slightly before turning her head to look around. Suddenly she stilled and cocked her head, hoping to hear it again.
"Seems unusually active today, doesn't it?" Silvertail looked in the direction of the howl, tilted her head back and howled again, confirming her location. "I haven't seen anyone in weeks, but suddenly there are a couple of new faces to meet." She shook herself slightly in face of the chilling winds.
"If you don't mind, Raintail," she said softly, "I'll wait for explanations until we're all together."
Still standing stiffly, Raintail nodded slightly. She swiveled her head towards where she thought the sound was coming from. Glancing at Silvertail, she noticed she was still slightly off. ‘Drat,’ she thought. ‘I so need practice in picking out sounds’ "How far away do you think it's coming from?" |

Silvertail nodded a greeting to the newest face, and she asked, "I'm Silvertail. Have you traveled far?" She glanced over at Raintail, uncertain if she should introduce her as well. After mentally debating for a moment, she decided to let the small wolf introduce herself if she wanted.
Raintail looked back and forth. She glanced at Silvertail one last time before turning to the newest wolf. She slightly ducked her head and said, “My name is Raintail.” She quickly straightened up and tilted her head in anticipation of the reply to Silvertail’s question.
"I am Violetfang. I've traveled for longer than I care to speak of. Have either of you been here long?" Violetfang nodded at the two wolves in front of her.
Raintail blinked. “I’ve been here for awhile. Since shortly before winter started. What brings you to here?”
"I've been here for a few weeks now," Silvertail's voice was quiet, clearly not enjoying the memories that accompanied her reply. "As for what brought me here... humans are encroaching a ways to the east. My pack was all but destroyed by them." Her ears twitched, listening carefully for sounds from the other areas. She was worried now about leaving the pups for so long with only Blackpaw for supervision.
"Do either of you have anyone else with you? Or is it just yourselves?"
Raintail’s ears flattened to her head as her head ducked. “Humans? Are they anywhere near here?” She shook her head. “And, no, I do not have anyone else with me. As far as I knew, I have been alone in this area for a long time.” She shook. A few small droplets of water dislodged from deep within her coat.
Violetfang stretched and yawned. "I just arrived recently and I have traveled alone for weeks now."
"The humans have yet to cross the mountains, as far as I know. They were settling in at the old pack home, and it's a very long journey away." Silvertail stretched slowly, then made a decision that she was fairly sure she was doing way too early. "I cannot stay here much longer...I have found some dens near the lake that you are both welcome to share. There's plenty of room." The wind blew harshly down the grasslands, making a loud rustling as it did. "And from the looks of it, it may rain soon...that might not be very good if you're stuck out here."
Looking up at the heavens, a smile reached Raintail’s eyes. “Rain? That’s good. It’s been awhile since there was some around here. The prey that I usually catch has been growing thin. But you said dens? Down near the lake? I haven’t found those yet.” She let out a soft sigh. “Though I like the rain, being dry during a storm will be much appreciated. Thank you.” |
